I originally met Liz and her Uniquely Yours team last fall at the Alzheimer Memory Walk when I was helping with registration. I kept seeing the tee-shirts and finally pulled a couple of the 'wearers' aside. "What is Uniquely Yours," I asked? This was the beginning of getting involved with Liz and her training procedures.
I will soon be 65 years old. I have had diabetes and high blood pressure for over 20 years. I had some knee repair done over 10 years ago and walk with a cane. It has been extremely difficult to get up out of chairs and has hurt to walk.
I began attending Liz’s "Well and Wise" group of older ladies and gentleman (just 1) held on Monday and Thursday mornings. My, what a work out she gives us! And, we have fun doing it while she has us work on all those stiff joints so we can move better. I noticed that each Monday I attended I would have more energy; sadly, my schedule only allows me to attend on Monday.
Since I was noticing a definite improvement, I contacted Liz about coming to my home to help me develop more flexibility and strength, especially in my legs. My goal right now is to be able to move better and to get my blood sugars under control; any other benefits because of the workouts she planned for me will be a plus.
She laid out a plan of action for me and then gave me printed material complete with pictures to follow when she was not here. I could do everything at home and at my own pace. I have noticed a definite improvement in energy, flexibility and strength. I no longer need the cane, on most days, to walk; however, I carry it because my knee is still weak and sometimes acts up. My blood sugars have somewhat stabilized at a lower level than when I first started. She definitely did develop a program just for me that is Uniquely Mine.
Now that the snow and ice seem to have left, I am walking each day for 20-40 minutes and am beginning to use weight machines to help strengthen my muscles. I know that this is not going to be a quick-fix. It is hard work and requires diligence. I also know that the period of time I commit to doing these each day will eventually pay off.
I am not a morning person, but I find that when I do my workouts in the morning, I have more energy for what the day holds and I don’t skip them because I am too tired at the end of the day. I can do my weight machines and cardio-machines or other exercises in an hour. Then, I can walk after lunch. For me, dividing this after breakfast and after lunch keeps my blood sugars more stable.
I had already committed to eating differently. I enjoy getting the new recipes she sends in her newsletters. I will have to find out if you can freeze the leftovers in the Great Grain Burger . . . one person cannot eat 12 servings.
I am living proof that you are never too old to decide to help yourself improve your health.
